The Texans could designate C.J. Fiedorowicz as player to return from injured reserve this year. The fourth-year tight end returned to practice on Wednesday and could play in two weeks if he does come off IR, according to NFL rules.
"He was out there today and it looked pretty good," head coach Bill O'Brien said. "I'd love to have him back. He means a lot to our offense. Great guy, tough guy. It looked like it was trending toward that, yes."
Fiedorowicz started in the season opener against Jacksonville but exited the game with a concussion. After missing preseason action with another concussion just weeks before, Fiedorowicz was placed on IR on September 12.
In Week 2, Deshaun Watson operated the Texans offense without all three tight ends and receivers Will Fuller V and Bruce Ellington. Now with the offense nearly at full-strength, Watson could also regain another dynamic target in Fiedorowicz.
"He's been, in the last couple years, a huge asset," quarterbacks coach Sean Ryan said. "Obviously was a very productive guy last year. He's done a real good job, so it would be great offensively to get him back, another weapon."
In 2017, the NFL passed a new rule that allows teams to bring back two players from IR. Teams do not have to designate ahead of time which players will return.
