The Texans added a quarterback to their roster, and it's a familiar face in Bradon Weeden.
The 7-year veteran returns to Houston, where he was on the roster in 2015 and 2016, after spending the 2017 season with Tennessee. According to General Manager Brian Gaine, who spoke with Marc Vandermeer on Texans TV, adding Weeden is in large part about how he can help the team's starting signal-caller.
"We feel that he'll be a good contributor to the offense, and equally to the quarterback room, and be a resource for Deshaun Watson," Gaine said.
Weeden was in training camp and the preseason last summer with the Texans, and his return was welcome news to Watson.
On Tuesday at the NFL Annual Meetings in Orlando, head coach Bill O'Brien shared that the Texans will be changing up their offense for 2018. Adding an experienced veteran like Weeden, who's started in Cleveland, Dallas and Houston, will help in the transition.
"This is a guy that brings a great attitude into the meeting room," O'Brien told Texans TV. "Knows our offense. He was here, even though we're changing it a little bit. He has an understanding of the foundation of the offense. When he was available, we felt like it made sense to bring him back to Houston."
In addition to Watson and Weeden, Taylor Heinicke is also on the roster at quarterback for Houston.
In 2015 at Indianapolis, Weeden came off the bench to relieve an injured T.J. Yates. He completed 11-of-18 passes in that contest for 105 yards and a touchdown. It proved to be the game-winning score, and gave the franchise it's first-ever win at the Colts.
Weeden started the next week and completed 62.5 percent of his passes for 200 yards and a pair of scores, and he also ran for a touchdown in a win at Tennessee.
"He's actually gone out and won a game or two for us when he's had to play," Gaine said. "Brandon's a good teammate. He's got good arm strength. He's got size. He's got pocket pass ability."
Weeden and the Texans begin their offseason conditioning program on April 16 at NRG Stadium.Â
