Brian Hoyer ruled out, T.J. Yates to start vs. Jets

Brian Hoyer won't play against the Jets on Sunday, and T.J. Yates will be the starting quarterback.

Head coach Bill O'Brien ruled the starting signal caller out after Friday afternoon's practice.

Hoyer left Monday night's win over the Bengals late in the third quarter and has been going through the concussion protocol. He didn't practice on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday with the Texans.

O'Brien did say, however, he's optimistic Hoyer will return to practice and play next week.

It's the first reglular season start for Yates since Week 17 of the 2011 season.

He tossed a touchdown to DeAndre Hopkins in the fourth quarter of the win at Cincinnati, and completed 45.5 percent of his passes for 69 yards.

Yates and the Texans kick off against the Jets at noon on Sunday in NRG Stadium.
