In front of a home crowd at NRG Stadium, Case Keenum will get the start in the Texans' final preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers. Keenum and rookie Tom Savage will get one final chance to compete for the backup quarterback roster spot.
"We'll start Case in the game and then we'll determine based on the amount of plays because it's a difficult thing in a game when you try to make a fair evaluation," head coach Bill O'Brien said Tuesday. "We'll start Case and we'll see how many plays we get there with him and then we'll put Tom in at some point."
In the second preseason game against Atlanta, starter Ryan Fitzpatrick left the game after the Texans' first touchdown but returned just before halftime to run the two-minute drill. Though Fitzpatrick likely won't play on Thursday, O'Brien has not ruled out using him for certain situations like this if needed.
"I would say Fitzy probably would not in this game but he will be ready to go," O'Brien said. "Like you know what I did in that first game where I put him back in for two-minute drive. Something like that might happen. He'll be out there dressed and ready to go."
The Texans will kickoff against San Francisco at 7 p.m. CT on KTRK ABC-13 and SportsRadio 610.
