Cornerback Brice McCain posted on Twitter Tuesday night that he has agreed to terms on a three-year contract with the Texans, opting to re-sign with the team as an unrestricted free agent. The deal is not yet official, as it has not been announced by the Texans.
McCain, 26, was essentially a starter for the last two seasons as the Texans' nickel corner. Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips and defensive backs coach Vance Joseph praise his man-to-man cover ability in the slot, which the Texans missed in the final four games of last season after McCain was placed on injured reserve with a fractured foot.
McCain's agent, David Canter, also tweeted news of the three-year deal on Tuesday night.
A sixth-round draft pick out of Utah in 2009, McCain (5-9, 185) has played in 56 games with six starts in four seasons. He has four interceptions, 26 pass defensed and one defensive touchdown. He is the first of the Texans' unrestricted free agents to stay in Houston following the departures of fullback James Casey, safety Glover Quin and linebacker Connor Barwin.
