HOUSTON TEXANS AGREED TO SIGN ALL PRO CB DEREK STINGLEY JR. TO RECORD EXTENSION
HOUSTON – The Houston Texans have agreed to sign CB Derek Stingley Jr. to a three-year contract extension, the team announced today. The deal makes Stingley the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history.
Originally selected by the Texans with the third overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, Stingley has started in all 37 games he has played in and recorded 136 tackles (100 solo), 36 passes defensed and 11 interceptions. He is the only player in the NFL to record five interceptions in each of the last two seasons (2023-24).
In 2024, Stingley earned his first Associated Press All-Pro First Team honor and his first Pro Bowl nod after starting in all 17 games and posting career-high numbers in nearly every category, including total tackles (54), passes defensed (18) and tackles for loss (four), while also posting his second consecutive season with five interceptions. Stingley's five interceptions were tied for the team-high and ranked as the fourth-most in the NFL, while his 18 passes defensed stood as the second-most in the league. According to NextGenStats, Stingley allowed the lowest passer rating (56.9) and completion percentage (46.7%) among cornerbacks who played at least 400 coverage snaps. In Week 15, one of the many bright spots over his all-pro season, Stingley recorded five tackles, including two for loss, two interceptions and two passes defensed, becoming the first cornerback in NFL history to record two interceptions and two tackles for loss in a game. He would go on to be named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week, marking the second Player of the Week honor of his career. Stingley capped off his all-pro year becoming the first Texan in club history to record two interceptions in a playoff game and the fourth player ever to post two interceptions and five passes defensed in a postseason game.
The Baton Rouge, La. native played three seasons (2019-21) at LSU, where he started in 25 games and recorded 73 tackles, 21 passes defensed, seven tackles for loss and six interceptions. In 2019, Stingley earned consensus First-Team All-America honors from the AFCA, Associated Press, ESPN, The Athletic, CBS, Sports Illustrated, Sporting News and USA Today.
