Before Head Coach David Culley walked out of Thursday's team meeting, he gave Texans players a surprise.
Culley canceled Thursday afternoon practice in favor of some team bonding, he told media following his press conference.
"What's the team bonding?" someone asked.
"We're having a little team barbecue out here and I'm going to get some right now," Culley said as he left his presser.
The time off comes on a day when normally NFL teams would be playing their fourth preseason game. With the new league rules expanding the regular season to 17 games, the preseason was shortened to three games. The fourth preseason week becomes an extra week of preparation following roster cutdowns from 80 players to 53.
"It's important for us to just be able to get to know each other a little bit better and we'll spend this week concentrating on ourselves," Culley said Monday. "We aren't really thinking about Jacksonville down the road. Right now, this week is about us as Texans getting better."
The Texans finalized their 53-man roster on Tuesday and their 16-man practice squad on Wednesday. The Texans open the 2021 regular season against Jacksonville at NRG Stadium on Sept. 12. Kickoff is set for noon on CBS and SportsRadio 610. For tickets, click here.
