J.J. Watt and a number of Houston-based celebrities hope to give high school seniors the sendoff they deserve.
Due to widespread COVID-19 concerns, many schools cancelled their final two months of the semester as well as graduation ceremonies. The City of Houston and Houston First Corporation are partnering with Houston-area school districts to honor the High School Senior Class of 2020. Each school district will host their own personalized campus event along with a virtual tribute featuring Mayor Sylvester Turner and a host of stars recognizing the achievements of this year's graduates. Watt, who gave the 2019 commencement address at his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin, will be joined by James Harden, P.J. Tucker, Carlos Correa, Simone Biles, Slim Thug among many other celebrities with Houston ties.
"The 2020 high school senior class has achieved a major milestone during what is certainly one of the nation's most challenging times in recent history," Turner said in a statement. "They have sacrificed and endured, and I am so proud of every one of them. That is why I have asked the city of Houston, along with some extraordinary personalities to come together to honor and encourage these amazing students with a unique and special celebration."
The video tribute takes place Friday, June 5 at 6:30 p.m. and will be streamed on various Houston television, radio, and newspaper platforms. Click here for the list of official media partners.
