After a decade of handling field goal, punt and extra point snaps, veteran long snapper Jon Weeks has proven to be an instrumental part of the kicking unit and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.
The Houston Texans agreed to terms to re-sign Weeks, now entering his 11th season with the team. Weeks, signed by the Texans as a college free agent from Baylor in 2010, has re-signed with the team twice before in 2012 and 2015.
The Texans longest-tenured player has been nothing short of dependable, tough and smart, handling 1,580 snaps and contributing 30 special teams tackles in his 160 career games played.
Weeks has never missed a game in his 10 seasons, but came very close last year when he was suffered an ankle injury in Week 7 at Indianapolis. Despite a noticeable limp, Weeks stayed in the game.
"Yeah, you know that's one of those situations where I've always told myself as long as I'm not going to hurt my team, and I still feel like I can go out there and do my job to the best of my abilities and be there for my guys, I'm going to do it," Weeks said last season on Texans Radio. "It was a situation, I unfortunately rolled my ankle pretty bad. It hurt to put a little bit of weight on it, I was still able to after the training staff got me all tapped up, go out there and do my job and be there for my guys when they needed me. I've always told myself again, if I was able to do that, that's what I was going to do, and there was never any second thought about it."
In 2019, Weeks and the Texans special teams led the NFL in opponent field position after kickoffs and set a single-season franchise record in opponent punt return average, averaging just 3.4 yards per return.
"You can go up and down our special teams unit with the impact players," Weeks said. "Guys that have embraced the role, why they're here, and how that can contribute to this team and help this team win football games and ultimately get to the big game at the end. That's everybody's goal and that's what we're striving to do."
This month, the Texans signed kicker Ka’imi Fairburn and return man DeAndre Carter to contract extensions and tendered a qualifying offer to special teams ace Dylan Cole.
