The Texans practiced Monday morning without quarterback Matt Schaub, who was away because of a death in the family.
"Matt had a death in his family and will miss today and tomorrow morning," head coach Gary Kubiak said. "Our thoughts are with him and his family."
Because Schaub was gone, T.J. Yates and Case Keenum got more reps, and that was a plus in the eyes of Kubiak.
"This is a really good deal for them today because they got put in a tough spot," Kubiak said. "Quarterback's not here: go lead the team. Everybody's looking at them.
"Some good reactions, some bad reactions. We'll go back and look at it today and they'll get another chance tomorrow."
This morning's work at times, featured piped in crowd noise played over loud speakers to simulate a game environment. That game-like simulation was welcomed by Yates.
"It was good to get some reps," Yates said. "It was as live as the scrimmages we do out here, with everybody off the field, coaches calling plays, no scripts."
Keenum continues to stick with his mantra of seizing opportunities whenever they're given, and responded in kind when asked about his reaction to possibly coming off the bench before Yates does against Miami this Saturday.
"Whenever it is, I know I gotta go in and operate," Keenum said. "I know I'm going to get a chance, no matter what time of the game it is. It's stilll running the offense and going against Miami's defense."
The Texans practice on Monday afternoon, and will go twice a day on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
