Rapid Reaction: Texans close out preseason with 22-10 loss to Rams

The Houston Texans closed out their 2019 preseason with a 22-10 loss to the Los Angeles Rams at home. Starters on offense and defense suited up but did not play in the finale. The Texans had 10 different players catch a pass and 14 players record at least one total tackle on defense.

"Guys are playing hard and that's good to see in the fourth game," head coach Bill O'Brien said. "Guys are trying to put good plays on tape and playing for each other, playing for the Texans, so it's good. It's been a good night."

O'Brien selected the game’s coin toss captains to be fullback Cullen Gillaspia, wide receiver Floyd Allen and nose tackle Javi Edwards. All three are rookies that played high school football in Houston.

Quarterback Joe Webb played most of the game, completing 19-of-29 passes for 163 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also rushed for a team-high 30 yards on three carries. Webb played until the fourth quarter, when he was injured on a play and did not return. O'Brien did not have an update after the game on Webb, who hopped off the field on one foot.

On the opening drive, Webb led a scoring drive that ended in a five-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jerell Adams.

"Jerell had a good preseason," O'Brien said. "Was productive, got better, improved every day, really did some good things, no doubt."

"I felt like I had a pretty good season from the beginning to the end," Adams said. "I just went in and tried to give it my all."

Houston rushed for 97 yards between Webb, Josh Ferguson, Karan Higdon Jr. and Damarea Crockett.

J.J. Watt conducted an impromptu interview in the third quarter with teammates D.J. Reader, Angelo Blackson and Brandon Dunn.

The Texans defense forced three turnovers (two interceptions and one fumble) but were unable to convert the takeaways into points. Tyrell Adams led the defense with nine tackles, one tackle for loss, one quarterback hit and one fumble recovery. Adams recovered a fumble, forced by fellow coin toss captain Edwards, on a play by Rams running back Matt Colburn in the fourth quarter at the Rams' 44-yard line.

Ka'imi Fairbairn kicked a 39-yard field goal to give Houston a 10-7 lead in the second quarter, finishing his preseason with a perfect field goal record.

The Texans will begin their process of finalizing the 53-man roster.

Teams currently have 90 players on their rosters, which will be trimmed to 53 by Saturday 3 p.m. CT.
