"It's something everybody needs to know how to do, and it's very important in any job that you want to pursue in the future," said D.J. Reader after speaking to the students at Sutton Elementary. "We're showing kids how important reading is."
Reader and United Way of Greater Houston teamed up to inspire children to read with the United Way Reading Rally with the hopes of progressing reading skills and ultimately preparing these kids for a brighter future.
"They're full of life and they're the future," Reader said.Â
"Not everyday do you get kids that look up to you and want to listen to what you have to say. I know it was very important to me when people came back and talked to me. It's always important. You want to use your platform to go back and give back."
Helping inspire the future generation is extremely important to Reader, but impacting reading level is something even more personal to his story.
"When I was younger, reading helped me out a lot," Reader said. "I didn't talk very much, so reading helped me express myself, learn different things and gain different interests."
