Mallett took over at quarterback against Kansas City with 6:10 left in the fourth quarter with Houston trailing 27-9. Brian Hoyer struggled in his first start, committing two turnovers in the first half. Kansas City capitalized on both the interception and fumble, scoring 14 points and gaining a 21-point lead by halftime.
On his first series, Mallett threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Hopkins after a 7-play, 59-yard drive. He also successfully converted the ensuing two-point play to Hopkins. The Chiefs lead Houston 27-17 with 4:07 left in the game.
