* HOUSTON* – The Houston Texans have agreed to contracts with unrestricted free agent DE N.D. Kalu, free agent LB Zeke Moreno and re-signed exclusive rights free agent LB Kenneth Pettway, it was announced today.
Kalu (6-3, 265) played in 15 games with the Philadelphia Eagles last season, starting eight, and registered 38 tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble. The 30-year-old Kalu has played in 104 games in his nine-year career with 26 starts and has recorded 199 career tackles, including 118 solo stops, 26 sacks, an interception, four forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries.
The nine-year veteran returns to Houston, where he played collegiately at Rice. Kalu was originally drafted in the fifth round (152 nd overall) of the 1997 NFL Draft by Philadelphia. He signed with Washington in 1998 after being released by Philadelphia and played the next three seasons for the Redskins before rejoining the Eagles in 2001.
Moreno (6-2, 235) played in four games in 2005 with the Philadelphia Eagles, making five special teams tackles. He spent training camp with the Texans last season before his release on Sept. 4. He signed with the Eagles on Oct. 11.
The former USC Trojan spent his first four NFL seasons with the San Diego Chargers. For his career he has 117 tackles and three sacks. He has one career interception with an eight yard return. Moreno started 13 of 16 games in 2003 for the Chargers with a career- high 78 tackles and two sacks.
Pettway (6-3, 236) was drafted by the Houston Texans in the seventh round (227
th overall) of the 2005 NFL draft. He was signed off the Texans practice squad
on Dec. 9. He was inactive for the last four games of the season.
