Three keys for Texans offense

3 things Texans offense hopes to improve
The Texans offense made progress through the first eight games of the season, ending with a 20-13 win over Detroit that included two touchdown drives and two field goal drives. Heading into the bye week, the self-scouting has begun.
Here's what the Texans hope to do better in the second half of the 2016 season.
Protect the football.
The Texans committed 13 turnovers, consisting of nine interceptions and four fumbles, through the first eight games of the season.
"There's a lot of things to improve on," offensive coordinator George Godsey said. "The biggest thing right now is turning the ball over. We're turning the ball over at least one time each game this season, so that's going to be a stress when the guys come back. They understand that and maybe we can help them with some things too."
Improve in the passing game.
While the run game has steadily progressed, the Texans passing game has struggled. Houston averages just 199.3 passing yards per game through the first half of the season.
"It seems like just from a break down standpoint whether it's a protection, a decision, a throw, a drop ball, we just got to be more consistent in that area," Godsey said.
Stick with the run game. (114 yards per game)
With the return of left tackle Duane Brown, the run game gained some much-needed consistency for the offense. The Texans average 114 yards rushing per game. Not only does it control time of possession, running the ball effectively allows for more options in the passing game.
"We have to be able to run the ball for four quarters because that helps the play action, helps Brock (Osweiler) with the comfort level and having everything at our disposal. Boots, screens, run actions and just straight drop back pass. That'll help the whole offensive unit as we go forward."
Following the bye, the Texans will head to Jacksonville to face the Jaguars on Sunday, Nov. 13. Kickoff is set for noon CT.

  1. Protect the football.*

"There's a lot of things to improve on," offensive coordinator George Godsey said Tuesday. "The biggest thing right now is turning the ball over. We're turning the ball over at least one time each game this season, so that's going to be a stress when the guys come back. They understand that and maybe we can help them with some things too."

2. Improve in the passing game.
While the run game has steadily progressed, the Texans passing game has struggled. Houston averages just 199.3 passing yards per game through the first half of the season. It's a collective effort to improve the passing game, according to Godsey.

"It seems like just from a break down standpoint whether it's a protection, a decision, a throw, a drop ball, we just got to be more consistent in that area," Godsey said.

3. Stick with the run game.
With the return of left tackle Duane Brown, the run game gained some much-needed consistency for the offense. Through the first half of the season, the Texans average 114 yards rushing per game. Lamar Miller currently ranks fourth in the NFL and second in the AFC with 637 yards rushing on 153 carries.

Not only does it control time of possession, running the ball effectively allows for more options in the passing game.
