Tim Kelly will have new role on offense in 2020

Tim Kelly's role will be different in 2020.

The offensive coordinator will also coach the quarterbacks, and call the plays this fall.

Head coach Bill O'Brien discussed the change on Tuesday at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis.

"Timmy will call the plays next year," O'Brien said. "Timmy has done a lot of that. He's just a really bright guy. He's a really good coach. The players really respect him. Has great knowledge of the whole offense."

Assisting Kelly with the quarterbacks will be T.J. Yates, who served as an offensive assistant with the linemen in 2019. Yates quarterbacked the Texans to a playoff victory in 2011, and was with the team under center from 2011-2013, as well as in 2015 and 2017. Carl Smith coached the quarterbacks in 2019, and he'll be an offensive consultant with the team in 2020.

Kelly and starting quarterback Deshaun Watson, acording to O'Brien, have an excellent rapport.

"Deshaun Watson and him have a great relationship," O'Brien said. "Deshaun has great trust in Timmy, and the work that Timmy puts in. What Tim brings to the table in the meeting room and on the field."

The Texans will gather for offseason conditioning on April 20.
