Tom Savage will get his chance.
The third-year quarterback spent the 2015 season on injured reserve, but Bill O'Brien said Thursday morning that Savage will get an opportunity to compete in OTAs.
"We are going to give him reps this spring," the Texans head coach said during a press conference at Lucas Oil Stadium. "I know he is out in Arizona right now working hard. I think he is out there with a couple of teammates."
O'Brien was peppered with questions about the quarterback position, and the likelihood of drafting one high in late April. But he also pointed out some of the positive attributes the former Pitt Panther possesses.
"Tom is a very hardworking guy, a smart guy, good communicator, good teammate," O'Brien said. "His work ethic is respected by the guys in our locker room."
The day after the Texans fell to the Chiefs in the Wild Card playoff game, Savage met with the media and wasn't bothered by the idea that he might have competition in the form of a Draftee…or a dozen Draftees.
"They can draft 12 quarterbacks," Savage said on January 10. "I am going to be ready to go. I am definitely excited about competing and that still falls under the category of controlling what I can control."
Savage and the Texans will return to NRG Stadium and the Houston Methodist Training Center on April 18 for offseason conditioning work. OTAs start on May 23.
