Tyrod Taylor played just one series in the Houston Texans preseason game at Green Bay on Saturday night, but moved the ball efficiently in his debut.
"I think it was productive," Taylor said. "We were able to make some plays and move the ball down the field. Obviously, you want to finish on a touchdown but anytime you get points, you can never be mad about that. Just something to clean up on that third down and move forward."
On the Texans first possession, Taylor completed 4-of-4 passes for 40 yards and a 108.3 passer rating. He led the offense on an 11-play, 53-yard scoring drive that resulted in a field goal.
"I thought Tyrod managed the game well," head coach David Culley said. "The one series that he had, it didn't feel like we finished the drive. We had a third-and-2 down there and we ended up having to kick the ball which, we can't get field goals in that situation, we've got to have touchdowns in that particular situation. Other than not being able to get us a score there with the touchdown, I thought he did exactly what we wanted him to do in that series."
After a four-yard run by Phillip Lindsay, Taylor threw a 17-yard pass to Chris Conley for a first down. Two plays later, Taylor connected with Conley again for an eight-yard pass play. Taylor found Keke Coutee for a short 4-yard gain over the middle to extend the drive on third-and-2. The 11-year veteran quarterback converted three first downs on the drive, including two Conley who caught 3-of-3 passes for 36 yards.
"He's a big target so you put it around him, strong receiver, strong hands, more than likely he's going to come down with the catch," Taylor said. "Impressed by him. He's got to continue to keep competing and continuing to make plays and it will definitely help our offense moving forward."
Ka'imi Fairbairn's 37-yard field goal gave Houston an early 3-0 lead against the Packers with 7:44 left in the first quarter. Rookie quarterback Davis Mills took over for Taylor on the next series.
