VanderBlog: Finale Fuels 53 Man Mystery

DeMeco Ryans and Nick Caserio have some brutal decisions to make following the Texans 17-15 win over the Rams to wrap up the preseason.

And that's a good thing.

These are the problems you want to have. The initial 53-man roster is due Tuesday. I say 'initial' because it can change in the following days due to desirable players becoming available and the possibility of trades.

But even cutting down to 53 might be as difficult as it's ever been for the Texans. There's more than enough talent in certain position groups to give the staff some long hours in the next couple of days.

How many running backs do you keep? Can we carry seven!? After watching the team rush for 155 yards on the Rams, I can envision all sorts of production from the men involved.

Cam Akers ran wild again, with 53 yards on seven carries, including a piece of work that included three spin moves along the way. J.J. Taylor averaged 4.3 yards per carry on seven attempts. Jawhar Jordan looked good. And, oh yeah, British Brooks, who scored two TDs last week, had 25 yards on five carries and played some fullback!

But the tough decisions hardly stop there. We've been talking about the loaded wide receiver group and the participants in the finale were all doing their best to make a case to be regular season playmakers.

After last week's eye-opening performance, John Metchie III had two sweet catches. One showcased a super-quick move along the sideline that further displayed how he's upping his game to its best NFL level.

Xavier Hutchinson had four nice grabs. And Quintez Cephus showed terrific talent on three receptions. Johnny Johnson III, who caught a preseason game-winning TD pass a couple of years ago, erupted with two jaw-dropping catches, including the final touchdown.

Myles Bryant led the way in tackles with nine, including a TFL. Neville Hewitt had a big third down stop. You already know he's basically a special teams superhero. Marcus Harris and Malik Fisher had QB hits. The Texans' defense wasn't able to hold the Rams under 100 rushing yards but the total was under 200 and the point total was 15, which you'll take every time you play.

Plenty of players who are 'locks' missed this one. But those who took the field knew there was a lot on the line. We all know that the 53-man roster is a movable object that's always being tinkered with. The fact that the Texans know that they will likely release players who could make other squads, immediately, speaks volumes about the depth that they've put together.

Sixteen players will be on the practice squad but there's no reason to think that some of them wouldn't be on some other team's 53 instead. Predicting all of the 53 is like picking games. There's no way you'd get them all right.

The mystery clears up soon.
