Tom Savage's interception to end Houston's final threat shouldn't diminish what was a tremendous effort by him and the offense on one of the toughest injury days you can imagine.
During the game, the Texans lost C.J. Fiedorowicz, Bruce Ellington, Braxton Miller and Alfred Blue on offense. We'll get to the defense later. Andre Ellington played a ton on a draw-it-up-in-the-dirt kind of day that saw Savage throw for the most yardage in his career. DeAndre Hopkins was his usual masterful self and Stephen Anderson came up with two amazing catches including the team's only TD and a 4th and 19 conversion that we would have been talking about for a long time if the Texans pulled this out.
It was a rough day for Ka'imi Fairbairn, who missed two field goals, including a 28 yarder that, had he made it, would have enabled the Texans to attempt a game winning kick on their last meaningful drive, instead of needing a touchdown to take the lead.
The defense was solid again, if you take out the last Titans play, a 75 yard run as they were looking to kill the clock. The problem with the defense in these last two outings is they haven't taken the ball away. Yes, Houston pounced on a fumble on the first punt of the day but there were no picks off Marcus Mariota, who had been struggling with six interceptions in his last two games.
This loss seals the deal that there will be no winning season for the first time since 2013. Houston is now playing for pride and professionalism. It's a strange feeling after three consecutive winning seasons, but here we are.
The injuries are everywhere. Add Johnathan Joseph and Jelani Jenkins to the list of players who got hurt against the Titans. The Texans have already been putting things together with figurative duct tape and glue. They'll have to dig deep once again to fill holes and remain competitive.
There's no doubting the fight in this team. The fact that they were one pass away from upsetting a division leader while dealing with so many health issues is actually impressive. But this league stops for no one. Losses are piling up as each Sunday is an on-the-record assessment of your organization.
