In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, HTC Amber, TORO and I spent the afternoon doing random acts of kindness around Houston. We made goodie bags that said, "We are cheering for you!" and left them on the windshields of people's cars for them to find when they left the building. Our hope for this activity was to make people's day and spread love and joy.
Mental health is a poignant issue and it is important to not be embarrassed or afraid if you are feeling upset and down. It is okay not to be okay and addressing your feelings can help you get back to feeling better faster.
Often times, many people put others first while pushing themselves to the bottom of their "to do" list. However, it is important to prioritize yourself because in order to give back and help others you need to be well. Doing something that is just for you even if it is a short amount of time can be very beneficial. Exercising, meditation, reading a book or whatever brings you joy can do wonders for a person's mental health.
In addition, many people find joy in giving back through small acts of kindness, which can go a long way since you never know what a person is dealing with in their life. For myself, this activity of placing the bags on people's cars was very fulfilling because I know people were not expecting them and perhaps, they were having a bad day, so this easy act of kindness might have had the ability to change their day.
As we wrap up Mental Health Awareness Month, make a point to practice health not only physically but mentally as well. Start a new habit that can make big changes, prioritize yourself or give back to others so you can live a healthy lifestyle.
