Free agent wide receiver DeAndrew White signed with the Texans and practiced with the team in full pads on Tuesday.
"We worked him out yesterday," head coach Bill O'Brien said Tuesday. "He did a good job. He's in good condition. We had studied him when he was coming out. Strong player, kind of picked up some things just off of last night's meeting, was able to go out there and function today. Hopefully he's a good addition."
White (6-0, 195) is new to the Texans, but not to the city of Houston. The wide receiver attended Houston's North Shore High School and grew up cheering for the Texans. A free agent, White was ecstatic when he got the call from his hometown NFL team.
"I was excited," White said. "Hometown – you can't really beat that. You can't get better than that. I'm just blessed to have that call and have this opportunity."
White spent the 2015 season with the San Francisco 49ers and saw action in four games. Last September, the New England Patriots signed him to their practice squad.
Nearly a year later, White is wearing a No. 12 jersey on a team with numerous coaching ties to New England. White's transition seemed smooth, as the 25-year-old caught nearly every pass thrown in his direction.
"He did a great job coming out," DeAndre Hopkins said. "His assignments, he knew. He was in a similar offense to this before at the Patriots. He's been in the NFL so he was working extra. When he first came in, outside the meeting room, he stayed extra just to get his assignments down."
White's prior football experience could be an asset in adjusting to O'Brien's offense, having played for the likes of Bill Belichick and Alabama's Nick Saban.
"There's no doubt that guys that have the opportunity to play for Nick Saban or Bill Belichick or Andy Reid or Mike Tomlin or any of those guys that are great, all these guys that are great coaches," O'Brien said. "They bring something to the table because they understand what it means to come into practice and compete and having to learn on the run. I think when you looked at him today, it's only one day, but you could tell he had that sense of urgency that you have to have at the University of Alabama in order to even see the field. So, yeah, that's a good thing."
The Texans continue with Day 7 of training camp practice at The Houston Methodist practice fields at The Greenbrier on Wednesday.
