Texans at Jaguars | 5 Things to Watch

REG13-5things

The Texans (7-5) head east to Jacksonville (2-9) for a Week 13 AFC South matchup. The Jaguars are coming off their bye week, while this is the last game before Houston takes its bye break next weekend. Here are five things to watch when they kick off at noon CT inside EverBank Stadium.

1) Do It Again – The Texans haven't lost in Jacksonville since 2017. They lost there in 2013 as well, but have won on the road versus the Jaguars every other year since the start of 2011.

Last season Houston picked up its first victory of the year, and first win of the DeMeco Ryans era when they thumped the Jags, 37-17.

Despite those successes against Jacksonville, Head Coach DeMeco Ryans wants his squad to focus on playing their best ball.

"This week really isn't about the Jags," Ryans said. "It's all about the Texans, so whoever goes out there really has no bearing on what we're doing. We're just trying to go out and execute and play our brand of football. Play the best that we can play and that's it."

Linebacker and team captain Azeez Al-Shaair discussed the "p" word, and how Houston must play with a sense of urgency.

"We know the potential that we have," linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair said. "But potential, if it's not executed, means nothing. Everybody in the building understands, now more than ever, the urgency that you have to have in this league in general, but especially the month of November or December."

2) Continue it, Collins – Nico Collins returned to the lineup at Dallas, and in each game he's played since, he's scored a touchdown that was negated by a penalty away from the action. Still, in that 2-game stretch, he's led the squad with a combined nine catches for 146 yards, and he's also caught a touchdown.

The last two times he's faced the Jaguars, Collins has torched their defense. He cracked the 100-yard mark in each game, caught a touchdown in both contests, and has a combined 19 grabs for 255 yards.

"You put the film on and you see Nico running all over the place," Jaguars Head Coach Doug Pederson said. "It doesn't matter who's over there covering him. He's an outstanding player and he made some plays late in our game the first time. That's probably why they won that football game."

3) Don't beat yourself up – The Texans committed 11 penalties for 81 yards last week against the Titans. One of those flags wiped out a touchdown. Three others occurred on third down and either kept the Titans offense off the field or backed the Texans offense up into difficult 3rd-and-Long circumstances.

"It starts with just everybody being accountable," Offensive Coordinator Bobby Slowik said. "You can only overcome yourself so many times and we've been through this story so much this year. Everyone understands the repercussions. Everyone's extremely accountable in our room in understanding what they can and can't do and how it affects everyone around them and how important that is."

Houston has played four games this year when they've been flagged 11 or more times, which is tied for the worst in the NFL with Baltimore. Only the Ravens have committed more penalties that the Texans' 92.

4) Lawrence returns – Quarterback Trevor Lawrence is likely back in the lineup for Jacksonville after missing the last couple games with a shoulder injury. When he last played the Texans, he completed 54 percent of his passes, tossed two touchdowns, wasn't picked off, and was sacked just once. Houston wants to turn up the pressure on Lawrence this Sunday.

Defensive ends Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson, Jr. respectively have 10.5 and 9.5 sacks apiece. Hunter leads the NFL in pressure rate on a quarterback, as he gets to the passer 21.7 percent of the time. Anderson is right behind him in third place in that stat, at 19.1 percent.

"It is really hard on opposing quarterbacks and we see that in how teams try to protect against us with the chips and trying to slow our guys down," Ryans said. "That just shows how much respect that they have when the coordinators are preparing, they have to make sure that they block the edges and keep the edges blocked. Our guys are still doing a great job at finding a way to get pressure on the quarterback and get him down."

The Jaguars have allowed 24 sacks in 11 games in 2024.

5) Takeaway Time – Since the start of Week 6, the Texans have won the turnover battle in every game but one. In the game they didn't get more takeaways than turnovers, they were even. They're plus-12 in that span, and on the season, they're tied for third in the NFL at plus-9.

Further, they're tied with the Packers for the most takeaways in the league with 23, and they're also tied for first in the NFL with 59 punts forced.

The Houston Texans were joined by players around the league to raise awareness about a cause close to their hearts by wearing it on their feet. This year, more than 30 Texans players participated in My Cause My Cleats. Find the complete list of players and their causes here.
