Several youth football directors and coaches from the Houston area congregated at the 2013 Youth Football Leadership Forum on Saturday, April 13. Attendees discussed best practices, health and safety issues and more in an open forum, which was hosted by the Texans and USA Football at the University of Houston.

One of the main objectives of Saturday's meeting was to expose Houston-area youth league commissioners to the Heads Up Football Program, a USA Football initiative designed to promote concussion awareness and management, coaching education, proper equipment fitting and Heads Up Tackling. The program provides a set of recommended standards for parents, coaches and leagues.

In addition, the coaches and directors in attendance had the opportunity to share what their respective league is doing well. The distribution of ideas allowed the participating teams to gain insight on best practices aimed to improve each squad.

The event was one of 35 State Leadership Forums across the United States, providing youth football league commissioners and presidents the opportunity to network with peers, USA Football representatives and NFL teams.
