Houston Texans & GHPAL Virtual Dialogue on Social Justice

Texans LB Jacob Martin and Legend ND Kalu joined Houston Police Department Executive Assistant Chief Troy Finner, and teens from the Greater Houston Police Activities League (GHPAL) program for a virtual dialogue on social justice and relational policing. Teens had the opportunity to ask the panelists questions and engage in a meaningful conversation about policing. The mission of GHPAL is to reduce juvenile crime and violence through "relational policing" which includes building trusting relationships between youth, law enforcement and the community. This program is part of the Houston Texans commitment to strengthen relationships between youth and police officers through positive police and community interactions.

Houston Texans Legend Cecil Shorts III recently visited Emancipation Park, the oldest park in Texas, to learn more about Juneteenth and the role it has played in the life of African Americans.

A Houston native, Michael Thomas has always been on the forefront of making the community around him a better place en route to his Walter Payton Man of the Year nomination. Thomas has focused on social justice issues and his approach has been two-fold, centering on advocacy and education while driving legislative change. In 2020, he created the unique design of the NFLPA's "END RACISM" pre-game warm-ups, organized a Texans players-only video calling for social justice reform and generated over $17,000 for HBCU scholarship funds by auctioning off special game memorabilia. Lastly, his annual free football camp, "Camp Mike T", is reflective of Thomas' dedication to empower young Houstonians while providing them with the additional resources to become impactful citizens in today's society.

Janice, Cal and Hannah McNair discuss racism and social injustice with Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. Turner shares his story of growing up in Houston, being bused across town to a primarily white school, and going on to earn his way to Harvard Law School. Former Philadelphia Eagles Cornerback Roynell Young founded Pro-Vision Academy in 1990 as a way to help young students in Houston. Pro-Vision began as an afterschool program and has grown to a 3rd-12th grade state charter school with supplemental workforce and education programs to ensure college and career-readiness. Roynell Young has impacted more than 6,000 young people's lives in Houston.
