As it stands now, four of the Texans' eight picks in this draft are in the sixth and seventh rounds. John Harris tells me that the third round pick might be attractive to trade into more picks next year or maybe as currency to get another selection or two in the fifth round or higher.
In terms of draft value, sixth rounders don't exactly carry Bitcoin status, but the Texans have three of them and they might be useful to throw into a potential transaction along the way.
I'm thinking there will be an attractive player for Nick Caserio to grab at pick 67. Maybe we'll see trades later on. For instance, what if they want an extra fifth round pick? Could they use the 6th rounders to wheel and deal?
If they stay put, they certainly have volume on their side in the later rounds. The math is simple – the more shots you have at finding contributing players in the late rounds, the better chance that you come up with some.
Think about some of these players the Texans have selected in the sixth and seventh round: Andre Hal, Derek Newton, Ryan Griffin, Brice McCain, Zach Diles and David Quessenberry, to name a few.
Hal was a capable starter who fought cancer, came back and retired early. Newton was a solid right tackle until he injured both knees on one play. Griffin was a productive contributor at tight end. McCain played in the league for nine years. Diles played for eight. It ultimately didn't work out for Quessenberry here but he started down the stretch for Tennessee last year.
